    MEII is established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation based in Washington DC. Berl Bernhard becomes the first Chair of the Board, which included Sec. Madelaine K. Albright, Henry E. Catto, William E. Mayer, and Ann McLaughlin Korologos.

  • 2007

    In partnership with OPIC, PIF, and the Norwegian MFA, MEII launches its inaugural $160 million Loan Guarantee Facility (LGF1) at the Bethlehem investment conference.

    Amb. Thomas Pickering and Mara Rudman join the MEII Board of Directors.

    MEII approves its first guaranty for a commercial loan to a Palestinian SME.

    MEII guarantees $16 million in loans from two local banks to help launch the second mobile phone operator in the West Bank.

    MEII board of directors visit Ramallah.

    MEII reaches $50 million in approved SME loans.

    MEII guarantees $5 million for the first ever locally syndicated loan in the West Bank.

    2010

    MEII guarantees the first ever commercial loan to a local microfinance intermediary.

    Launch of Affordable Mortgage and Lending Company (AMAL), a $500 million mortgage facility to provide long-term housing loans.

    MEII trained and developed the SME underwriting capabilities of 120 loan officers.

    MEII adds another bank to LGF1 bringing the total number of participating banks to 9 representing 85% of the local credit market.

    Ziad Asali joins the MEII Board of Directors.

    In partnership with Sida, MEII launches a $20 million guaranty facility (SGF1) and technical assistance program for SMEs in the marginalized communities in Area C of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip.

    In partnership with OPIC, the $50 million Tunisian Credit Guaranty Facility (TCGF) is launched with three Tunisian banks.

    MEII has created and/or sustained 15,000 private sector jobs.
